Beyond Preservation: The Call to Sustainability in Ministry

Rev. Dr. David S. Bell, President & Executive Director

When many people hear the word sustainability, they often think about environmental practices, energy efficiency, or corporate responsibility initiatives. These concepts are important conversations, but sustainability is ultimately about something much broader: ensuring that the resources entrusted to us today continue to serve the mission of tomorrow. For churches and nonprofit organizations, sustainability is not simply about preserving buildings, balancing budgets, or protecting investments. It is about faithful stewardship.

A recent Harvard Business Review article explored why many sustainability initiatives fail to gain traction. The research concluded that leaders sometimes struggle to connect those initiatives to the priorities that guide organizational decision-making. The article emphasized the importance of demonstrating how sustainability efforts create measurable value, manage risk, and strengthen long-term organizational health.

Moving Beyond Short-Term Thinking
The same principle applies to ministry. When we discuss stewardship in the Church, we are not merely talking about reducing expenses or increasing revenue. We are talking about aligning our resources with our calling. Faith communities are called to think beyond the immediate moment. Jesus reminded us that faithful stewardship involves recognizing what has been entrusted to us and using those gifts wisely for the benefit of others. The decisions that we make today shape the opportunities available to future generations.

For congregations, sustainable ministry may include:

🌱 Caring for physical resources – maintaining buildings, reducing unnecessary costs, and making thoughtful investments can free more resources for ministry and mission.

💰 Strengthening financial health – developing healthy reserves, managing debt responsibly, and creating long-term financial strategies allow churches to respond faithfully when opportunities arise.

🤝 Investing in people and leadership – growing leaders, supporting pastors, and creating systems that allow future generations to serve effectively.

🌎 Aligning resources with values – investing, spending, and stewarding financial resources in ways that communicate our values matter.

The Importance of Telling the Story
One of the most important lessons from sustainability conversations in the business world is that leaders must communicate the why behind an initiative. A proposal is more likely to gain support when people understand how it advances the organization’s mission and creates lasting impact. Church leaders understand this truth instinctively because we know that people are inspired not by budgets and plans alone, but by a compelling vision of how their generosity can transform lives and advance God’s work in the world.
We do not invite generosity simply by presenting numbers. We invite generosity by connecting resources to transformation.

• A capital campaign is not ultimately about bricks and mortar—it is about ministry made possible.
• An endowment is not simply a financial account—it is a commitment to future generations.
• A planned gift is not merely a transaction—it is a witness of faith that extends beyond our lifetime.

Faithful Stewardship Creates Future Possibilities
Our mission is centered on helping churches, leaders, and individuals faithfully steward the resources God has provided. We believe investments should not only grow financial resources but also support ministry, leadership development, and the future of the Church. Sustainability is not about maintaining the status quo. It is about creating the conditions for mission to continue. The question for every congregation is not simply: “How do we preserve what we have?” The deeper question is: “How do we faithfully use what we have been given so that God’s work can continue for generations to come?”

Sustainable investing reflects this same commitment to faithful stewardship. For many churches and ministry organizations, investing is not only about financial return—it is also about ensuring that the resources entrusted to them are aligned with the values and mission they proclaim. By considering both financial performance and the broader impact of investments, churches can seek opportunities that support long-term growth while honoring principles of social responsibility, care for creation, and the well-being of communities. Sustainable investing reminds us that every financial decision is an expression of stewardship and an opportunity to advance God’s work in the world.

Sustainability with Purpose
The future of ministry depends on the choices that we make today. Every financial decision, every investment strategy, and every act of stewardship is an opportunity to strengthen the Church’s witness and expand its impact. When we approach resources with wisdom, generosity, and a long-term vision, we do more than sustain organizations—we help create pathways for communities of faith to flourish for generations to come.

Sustainability is not simply about preserving what we have received. It is about faithfully preparing what we leave behind. Together, through thoughtful stewardship, we can ensure that the mission of the Church continues with strength, purpose, and hope.
